Book Launch Party: Typhoon Kingdom by Mathew Hooton at in. Studio

Need a night out? We can tell you where to be.

On June 27th at 7pm, in. Studio + Cafe is so happy to be hosting the book launch of the newest work by Matthew Hooton titled Typhoon Kingdom.

In. Studio+Cafe are big supporters of creative endeavours and brave people. And one of those people is Matthew Hooton. Writing a book, let alone getting it published is a tough gig. After all, books can take years to write, hidden in a dark room editing, self-analysing, re-writing, designing, publishing. It’s worth marking the Mt Everest-like climb with a book launch party. And who doesn’t love a party?

In. Studio+Cafe has hosted book readings and gatherings before and it’s a great night out – a room full of like-minded creative sorts milling about, glass of wine in one hand, tasty morsel of fresh local produce in the other. The bar will be open with our full bar’s selection of local beer and cocktail menu.

So come join us and toast the arrival of Typhoon Kingdomby Matthew Hooton

About the book:

Typhoon Kingdom by Matthew Hooton

Based on the seventeenth-century journal of a shipwrecked Dutch sailor and testimonies of surviving Korean ‘Comfort Women’, Typhoon Kingdomis a story of war, romance and survival that brings to life the devastating history of Korea at crucial moments in its struggle for independence.

In 1653, the Dutch East India Company’s Sparrowhawkis wrecked on a Korean island, and Hae-jo, a local fisherman, guides the ship’s bookkeeper to Seoul in search of his surviving shipmates. The two men, one who has never ventured to the mainland and the other unable to speak the language, are soon forced to choose between loyalty to each other and a king determined to maintain his country’s isolation.

Three hundred years later, in the midst of the Japanese occupation, Yoo-jin is taken from her family and forced into prostitution, and a young soldier must navigate the Japanese surrender and ensuing chaos of the Korean War to find her.

‘Brilliantly original, persuasive, revelatory and affecting’

Brian Castro

‘Polyphonic, panoramic, yet tender and leavened with irony’

Nicholas Jose
